Our family has liked going to shows ever since the kids were babies. Last summer both of the kids were in a drama camp. And, this fall, they saw a friend in a dinner theatre show. Jess had really wanted to do something with drama and I kept my eyes out until several opportunities fell our way.
The one we chose was the theatre show, Seussical, being produced in Catonsville. The story incorporates some of our favorite Seuss stories: Horton Hears a Who, Mayzie La Bird, and McElligott's Pool. It was very time intensive and Jess was up for the challenge. She auditioned, got cast in a few small roles, and was committed and dedicated to the show.
The cast ranged in age from 4 to 16. Several of the kids had been in multiple productions and some were in magnet schools for the arts. It warmed my heart to see everyone together. Below, the kids are playing a rhythm game before one of the shows.
Henry wasn't interested in doing a show at first, but once he saw a dress rehearsal, he was hooked. He went to all 4 shows, several more rehearsals, and a cast party. He and Jess are going to do more shows with this producer including a summer production of Aladdin, Jr. this summer.
The show also opened a door for interest in music. Both the kids started piano lessons and are loving playing on the same piano I had as a kid. And Jess also started voice lessons. The kids are going to be in their first talent show in a week and are looking forward to sharing their new interests with other homeschoolers.
Another perk was that we made some new friends. One family had kids with similar interests and now we're beginning to play together regularly.
Life is good.
